Welcome to the Engineering Officer Cadet Training Programme at Southern Maritime Training Institute (SMTI). As an Engine Cadet enrolled in our esteemed institution, you are embarking on a transformative journey towards becoming a proficient and respected engine officer in the maritime industry. This comprehensive programme is meticulously designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to excel in the dynamic world of marine engineering.

As an Engine Cadet, your primary responsibility is to provide invaluable support to the Engineering Officers onboard by assisting in the maintenance of the vessel’s main engines and all mechanical equipment. This includes the meticulous task of recording daily logs to ensure the seamless operation of critical systems.

Engineers play a pivotal role in ensuring the optimal functioning of all engines and technical systems onboard, thereby safeguarding the safety of the vessel and its crew. Throughout the programme, you will receive rigorous training aimed at honing your engineering prowess, ensuring that you are well-equipped to maintain and troubleshoot complex machinery with precision and efficiency.

Our Engineering Cadet training programme sets the gold standard in quality training, providing a structured pathway for aspiring engine officers to achieve their career aspirations. The programme is divided into distinct phases, each offering a unique blend of academic instruction, industrial exposure, and practical training onboard vessels

Intake Limitations

To ensure personalized attention and effective training delivery, each course has a maximum intake limit of 24 students. This limited class size enables us to maintain a conducive learning environment and facilitate meaningful interactions between instructors and cadets.

Academic Faculty

Our esteemed faculty comprises highly qualified lecturers and instructors, all of whom hold certifications in accordance with MSN 03/2022 issued by the Director General of Merchant Shipping, Merchant Shipping Secretariat, Sri Lanka. With their expertise and dedication, they are committed to delivering comprehensive and engaging instruction that meets the highest educational standards.

Entry Requirements

  • Be above 17 years of age and below 24 years.
  • Hold a credit pass in English at the GCE O/L Examination (Local / London).
  • Possess two passes at the GCE A/L examination (Local / London) in either the Maths stream or Biology stream (including a pass for physics), or the Technology stream (including a pass for Science for Technology or Engineering for Technology).
