Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Education

TARGET GROUP

This Programme will be offered to Teachers and Principals of primary schools, caregivers in Early Childhood centers and any other interested persons in the field of Early Childhood and Primary Education.

PROGRAMME AIM

The overall aim of the Programme is to improve the quality of Primary Education in Sri Lanka.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

♦ To enable the participants to perform effectively as teachers and care givers in the field of Primary Education by,

♦ Becoming familiar with accepted theories and practices in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education.

♦ Inculcating positive attitudes in working with children in Primary Schools.

♦ Developing teaching skills needed, through practical work.

♦ Sensitization to current issues related to the specific needs of institutions and groups placed in special circumstances.

♦ Strengthening the knowledge and skills related to selected academic disciplines.

♦ Enhancing organizational and management capabilities related to the primary classroom.

♦ Strengthening capabilities in interacting with parents and communities.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

Admission to Level 3 (1st year)

The students who wish to register for courses at level 3 of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Education Degree programme should fulfill the following qualifications:

1. Applicants should be 18 years or over on the closing date of applications.

and

2. At least three (3) passes at the General Certificate in Education (Advanced Level) examination and six passes at the General Certificate in Education (Ordinary Level) examination including First Language and Mathematics

Or

3. Successfully completed the Advanced Certificate in Pre-school Education Programme conducted by the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Or

4. At least pass grade in minimum of thirty (30) courses credits or granted exemptions at SLQF Level 2 of any Foundation Programme conducted by the Open University of Sri Lanka and six passes at the General Certificate in Education (Ordinary Level ) examination including First Language and mathematics.

Or

5. National Diploma in Teaching (Primary Education) offered by the National College of Education.

Or

6. An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the senate.

ALL CANDITATES SHOULD SIT FOR A SELECTION TEST CONDUCTED BY THE UNIVERSITY.

Admission to Level 5 (3rd Year)

 The students who fulfill the following conditions will be eligible to register for courses at level 5 of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Education Degree Programme.

1. Diploma in Early Childhood and Primary Education conducted by the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Or

2. Higher Diploma in Early Childhood and Primary Education conducted by the Open university of Sri Lanka.

Or

3. National Diploma in Teaching (Primary Education) offered by the National Colleges of Education.
