Bachelor of Information Technology (External Degree)

The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree, introduced by the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) in 2000, is Sri Lanka’s first-ever external IT degree. Designed to produce qualified IT professionals, the programme caters to those unable to attend public universities or seeking additional qualifications. It also supports working IT professionals pursuing formal education through self-study. The BIT programme, structured according to ACM guidelines and the University Grants Commission’s Policy Framework, is continuously updated to meet industry needs. Since 2003, e-learning tools like Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) have been incorporated to enhance self-study, providing students with quizzes, learning materials, and video content. The programme typically spans three academic years.
