Overview of the course


Explore the relationship between literature and historical forces across space and time. You will learn to expertly analyse diverse literary texts from a range of periods and places, alongside exploring the value and meaning of extensive sources including letters, oral testimonies, images, archaeological evidence, and material objects. Combining English and History will give you the opportunity to uniquely understand the creative aspects of historical writing and the importance of locating human expression across chronological, geographical, and cultural contexts.The course content is contemporary, exploring the today’s relevance and legacies of contested pasts alongside deep understanding of human communication and ideas. Content on sustainability, civil and human rights, identity, postcolonialism, gender and nuclear literature ensures that this course is relevant to current global challenges.


Entry requirements


For students from Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan A/Levels, English language entry requirements are Sri Lankan GCE A-Level: Grade C, IELTS 6.0 with minimum of 5.5 in each component or alternative English language qualification accepted by the University at the appropriate grade Students who do not meet the English language requirements may be required to take a pre-sessional English language (PEAP) course

For international students

IELTS (Academic only) - 7.0 (or better) (no component lower than 7.0); TOEFL (paper based) - 600 (or better) (with a minimum Test of Written English Score of TWE 5); TOEFL (electronic or computer based) - 250 (or better) (with essay rating of at least 5); TOEFL (internet based) - 95 (or better) (with 22 minimum in all bands); Pearson (PTE Academic) - 65 (or better) (with no communicative score less than 65); Cambridge English Scale Scores for FCE, CAE and CPE - Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) and Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE)/ 185 or above. No less than 185 in each skill.
